ARTS

GEM month 1- October 2023.webp

Here at Generation Earth Movement, we find beauty in the broken, the natural, the whisper.

Art is found in everything and the depths of everyone; it is the language known by all. Art possesses the ability to capture a moment, convey an emotion, and forge a connection.

Together, we aspire to amplify this beautiful whisper through poetry, opinion pieces, and imagery.

Life on this Planet

I get to
Have to
Live on this planet so dear
With its past mountains of jade
Now just the media's veneer
With its present sky sickened by toxic human presence
For the unlivable planets to watch in vengeance
Hoping that the universes terrors
Don’t come asking to be their neighbors
Watching as we slowly feed poison to our mother
Demolish the ties to thanks
Maybe the humans are not bad
Maybe just the circumstances are sad?
No money
Nor food to adorn the table
Lets burn the land to build a stable
Where the cattle can roam in mundane fear
And watch as humans bring The End near
I get to
Have to
Live on this planet
Change is painful
But slow suffering is worse
So please don’t tell my generation to
“Shush it”
We will live and grow just as you have
Please step out of the opaque room of a hot shower
Please let the cool air clean the mist with its power
Please look at yourself in the mirror and ask
“If I got a chance at a planet
So should my children
They should not have to live with deadly lack”

Incompetence

A gift not earned

 a lesson never learned

 for justice

 equality

 no one ever yearned

For decades, care for our Earth has just been passed by...

To save our Earth?

Did anyone ever try?

the natural blues that once colored the skies

are now the color of lies

 Polluted is our society

 polluted is our air

but as long as we have Starbucks

 no one seems to care

Animals who once took refuge in the cold

 their ice has melted

is humankind truly content with their gold?

Never , never are we content

 denial, lies, destruction

the truth has been bent

 A living creature

sorrow deep in his eyes

behind the bars of a cage

his family to whom he said his final goodbye

We are destruction, death, and lies

we are the reason for the dark skies

we are too busy with new apps and such

too busy to care about our earth very much?

A gift not earned

 a lesson still never learned

 for justice, equality for Earth

 no one ever yearned

For decades, care for our Earth has just been passed by

but GEM will no longer let that fly.

Our Planet

Our planet is our responsibility
She shelters us, provides for us, and exhausts herself for us
The ocean is a vast body of water that stretches all the way around the world
But we have twisted it so that now it is unfurled
Plastic floats and swirls in the sea that was once clean
How we could be so ungrateful and mean…
I will never comprehend
The animals, they live for life
Yet we have cut them down as if we were a knife
Bending, slicing, pounding
Bending, slicing, pounding
The rhythm of our drum
But what if we stood up and opened our arms wide
Lifted the broken spirits and exhausted lives
Into shelter, into love, they will come
Our greed, our lies
Has pounded sliced and bent all lives
Children watch as we unfurl
Our home, our world
Yet as we hurt
Lies are shot into the universe
Sending their hopes of life into reverse
Yet all we think and all we say is greed and hungry violence
Making things worse
What have we done?
We knew it would happen
We chose to ignore it
The lives, they split
But yet we keep slicing, pounding, bending
We must try to mend
The lies the hurt the hate
Let us write our own fate

WRITING

We have 9 years until the damage is done. We have been aware of this for so long, so why must we wait until the last minute, if ever? Why can we be so willfully ignorant of this crime we are creating? It is so easy to forget just how much is being rejected into the oceans, the earth. We act as if all of our straws, Amazon returns, toothpaste tubes, egg cartons, you name it, gets sucked into a black hole. A vacuum that sucks all 7.8 billion humans’ stuff into nowhere. Some void where nothing exists. But this is not the case. All of this is sitting in landfills and the ocean. And it is not going to disappear. So we must figure out a way to stop this unacceptable behavior.
That’s just the thing. It is not that we are incapable. We are a very intelligent species with many, many talents and abilities, so why can’t we do this? If we can build cars that run off of hydrogen, connect with others 17,000 miles away instantaneously, even send our people to the moon,  can we not save our own planet? Why are we so careless and obsessed with our businesses, our inventions, our profits, that we cannot bother to save our own home? We as a species have done great things, and can continue to do so, but how can we do this if there is not a planet for us to live on?
It is not necessary for us all to agree on everything, and it is unrealistic for us to believe that that will happen. But climate change is not a matter of politics, religion, ethnicity. It’s a matter of humanity. We can rise together as a species to stop our destructive habits. We don’t need to agree on a current political leader to help our planet, help each other. So please, join us in the fight for the Earth. Because it is not just GEM’s, not just activists’, but everybody’s fight.

Life is something to treasure unconditionally. When people say “live today like there is no tomorrow”... That is what we need to do. I wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast and look outside as I do my schoolwork. Green trees, blooming bushes, flowers of every color, and once and awhile a blue heron, with wings so powerful and big, you can only stare, alights upon the dew covered grass. The blue heron represents something significant to the North Native American tradition. It represents self determination and self reliance. But there are two other things that it represents. The ability to progress and evolve. That is what our world needs to do. Progress and evolve. Because honestly, humans have only been around for a blink of an eye to the Earth. We might think we are so significant, but if we look around we see that we are only a footprint a speck of dust floating in our galexy. Nature has been an everlasting strength of our planet. When msny species were wiped out multiple times in the past they bounced back. But this time, most likely, many of the species won't come out alive. Including us. Because of the hole in the ozone layer, greenhouse gasses, pollution, deforestation and so much more, our species probably won't make it. But. If we work together and stand for our planet, for nature, the microorganisms, the oceans, the rain forests, the mountains, and the great blue heron and everything else, we can make a difference.  Join us to make a stand, a larger footprint of change.
